Plans to erect a memorial to Edward Bransfield are being coordinated by ‘Remembering Edward Bransfield’ (www.rememberingedwardbransfield.ie), a voluntary group that is raising funds to unveil a monument in Ballinacurra, Co. Cork, on 30 January 2020 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first sighting of Antarctica. Edward Bransfield was born in County Cork, Ireland, circa 1783. Though sometimes thought of as English, it was in fact brought to Ireland in its present form by the Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. After many months of research, discussion and debate, the committee agreed the wording for the monument and a design submitted by renowned local sculptor Matthew Thompson. The “Remembering Edward Bransfield” committee was formed in 2016 to commemorate his feats and to erect a monument in his home of Ballinacurra.
